Australia's Cod Hole: Simply Amazing

Accordion Content

Overview

Just minutes after Becky and I took our giant strides off the deck of the Spoilsport, we found ourselves at a depth of 24.4 meters. Looking up from the sandy bottom, we could see a huge school of barracuda and some other pelagics passing overhead. The reef, which has a lot of little coral outcroppings, slopes up at a gentle angle. Gorgonias could be seen waving in the current, which was stronger down in the gulley than up toward the top of the reef. Overall, a very easygoing dive.

There were a few little white-tip reef sharks down along the bottom of the reef. The biggest one was just about three feet long. Once we came past the first mooring, we were face to face with one of the legendary occupants of Cod Hole. Over the course of the dive, we saw seven friendly potato cod.

Staying along the reef edge, we made our way to about 12 meters over the course of five minutes. Depths get shallower along the main reef, but the dive profile had us heading west toward some large bommies. We followed the rest of the group toward a cluster of anemones where clownfish were hiding. Also saw clown triggerfish, red-finned butterflyfish, and lots of others.
