Why is tropical acne a problem for divers?

Tropical acne can present a problem to divers with pre-existing cystic acne because the condition is often aggravated by the chafing of dive gear and exposure protection as well as the impact of heat and humidity. Divers can end up with patches of acne and cysts on their backs and shoulders and in the groin area. If there is a history of conglobate or cystic acne, divers should make sure it is in remission before diving. Using accutane before the dive trip can be an effective way of keeping the condition at bay. If it flares up while on holiday a course of steroids may relieve the problem.
