Echinoderms reproduce both sexually and asexually. Sexual reproduction takes place by means of sperm and eggs being released into the water where the eggs are fertilized. The embryos are generally planktonic and bilateral in symmetry and when they develop into larvae, they generally have arms and the left side of the larvae develops into the adult while the right side is absorbed into the left side. Asexual reproduction usually takes place via regeneration of the body when body parts fall off or are discarded. These body parts grow back and in some cases the piece that is discarded develops into a whole new creature.
