How do elasmobranchs protect themselves?

Sharks have highly developed senses and a nasty set of teeth and are virtually free of predators.  Rays and skates are able to camouflage themselves on the sea floor and rays have the added advantage of having stinging spines on the end of their tails that will deliver a nasty injury to anything that tries to prey upon it.
