What are gastropods?

Gastropods are a class of mollusks that include slugs and snails.  There are more than 400 families of gastropods and between 60,000 and 80,000 species of snails and slugs, although there is no way of knowing for sure how many there are.  There are estimates that there could be as many as 150,000 species.  Of these, more than two thirds are marine gastropods.
