What is the difference between snails and slugs?

The main difference between snails and slugs is that snails have a shell and slugs do not.  This physical difference leads to some behavioral differences.  For instance, slugs are more capable of compressing their bodies without a shell and will often squeeze themselves into areas in which snails could not fit.
