What do elasmobranchs look like?

The look of sharks is fairly well known; these creatures have a cylindrical body and a sleek design with a bullet-shaped nose.  Rays and skates have a dorso-ventrally flattened body that is easily distinguishable from the body of a shark.  Sharks tend to be grey in color whereas rays and skates tend to be grey or brown, easily blending in with their surroundings, particularly the muddy sea floor.
