Perhaps best known for its natural beauty, Cape Greco is a protected area that offers topside visitors plenty of hiking and some amazing views out to sea, where curvaceous cliffs punctuated with picture-window cutouts rise up from the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Swimmers take to the water here, and snorkelers long to go deeper; divers of course get the best views of all!
Agioi Anargyroi Cave
Located a short distance from the Cape Greco promontory, Agioi Anargyroi Cave is located in an area where huge boulders litter the seabed, lying as though scattered by a giant’s hand. Though you can hike a four kilometer trail to the caves and access them from shore, it’s much easier to take a boat to this shallow site, which offers average depth at about 10 meters. Look for fossils in the cliff walls, and enjoy the colorful sponges that cover the rocks; keep an eye out for groupers, moray eels, octopus, and lots of small creatures as you make your way around the site. Visibility is excellent here, often reaching 20 meters or better.
Canyon
Despite the site’s rugged topography, Canyon is a fairly easy site that’s suitable for intermediate divers. Occasionally washed by light currents and offering maximum depth at 18 meters, this site features stunning rock formations and grottoes where marine life takes shelter. Watch for the occasional green sea turtle or loggerhead here, particularly during the summer months when jellyfish are abundant, and keep an eye out for octopus and moray eels, too. Visibility is typically very good, sometimes exceeding 20 meters.
Kastelatsos Reef
A lovely site for a relaxing dive, Kastelatsos Reef is an excellent place to encounter colorful marine life in abundance. Schooling bream, groupers, barracudas, and other fish are plentiful here, and it’s not uncommon to encounter sea turtles, octopus, and moray eels. Keep an eye out for small rays in the sandy areas at the bottom of the reef, and watch for the occasional group of tuna or other pelagic fish near its outer edges. Maximum depth is 30 meters, and visibility is usually 20 meters or better.
Konnos Point
Easily accessed from shore or by boat, Konnos Point is one of the area’s most popular dive sites – and for good reason! Here, you’ll find fantastic rock formations covered in lush sponges and coral, plus there is plenty of marine life to see throughout the site. Best of all, this is a multi-level site everyone will enjoy; the reef gradually steps down from two to fifty meters, affording exceptional views into the clear blue distance, where tuna and other pelagic fish can sometimes be seen as they pass. Konnos Point is typically a calm site with very light currents, and visibility is stunning, sometimes reaching 30 meters or better.
Cape Greco is conveniently located within easy distance of Famagusta, Ayia Napa, and Protaras, all of which offer abundant lodging of various types, excellent Cypriot cuisine, and plenty of topside attractions ranging from historic sites thousands of years old to modern nightclubs and resorts. There are several different dive operators to choose from here, and the pace is wonderfully relaxed. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself longing to extend your holiday, once you experience the wonder that is Cyprus.
