Diving The Lighthouse Reef Atoll In Belize: The Great Blue Hole Awaits

Overview

Although the Great Blue Hole is well over 100 meters deep, the deepest dive profile for this trip is 130 feet, affording a view of the largest known underwater stalactites and stalagmites on the planet. Those who are not comfortable attaining this depth will enjoy a milder descent to a maximum depth of 60 feet. During your dive at Blue Hole, you are likely to encounter magnificent midnight parrotfish and other reef species, along with Caribbean reef sharks. Other shark species including hammerheads and bull sharks are sometimes encountered within Blue Hole, but are not sighted regularly.

A surface interval at Half Moon Caye Bird Sanctuary is followed by the second dive, which takes place at Half Moon Caye Wall, where pelagics and a profusion of reef fish swim against a backdrop of candy-colored sponges, black coral, and gorgonians that add even more magic to the reef’s numerous swimthroughs. Lunch at Half Moon Caye is followed by the day’s final dive, which takes place at Long Caye’s aquarium, which starts in 15 to 20 feet of water and affords a look deep into the abyss.
