Heron Island is renowned for its coral gardens, pinnacles, and marine life – and all the dive sites are located just a few minutes from the island’s white, sandy beaches.
Location
Heron Island is tiny, with a vast coral cay. It is a nature reserve, with Heron Island Resort being the only place visitors can stay. The island itself is located just 89 kilometers off the coast of Queensland.
Dates
The Heron Island Dive Festival takes place July 25 through July 29. If you can’t make it to the festival but want to experience Heron Island, the resort is open year-round and often offers midweek specials.
Dive Festival Highlights
Heron Island is one of Australia’s most sought-after dive destinations, which makes it the ideal site for the dive festival. Keynote speakers include Marine scientist and underwater photographer David Harasti, Divers Alert Network CEO John Lippmann, and other noted industry leaders.
Participants spend plenty of time in the water, enjoying guided snorkeling tours, two dives daily, and an optional night dive. Discover SCUBA and novice dive courses are offered each morning, making this the perfect opportunity to get a close friend or family member certified.
A daily wine tasting provides attendees the opportunity to socialize, and a gala dinner wraps up the week.
The reef off Heron Island is home to approximately 72% of the Great Barrier Reef’s coral species, plus it is home to approximately 60% of the GBR’s 1,500 fish species. With turtles, sharks, manta rays, and over 20 dive sites to explore, plus outstanding opportunities for learning and interacting with others who share your passion, this event is one you’ll certainly enjoy.
