What are coral reefs made of?

Corals are generally separated into two classes: hard corals and soft corals.

Hard corals create the main structure of a coral reef and their exoskeletons are made of calcium carbonate, otherwise known as limestone.  Soft corals have no exoskeleton and exist more like plants, with woody cores and fleshy rinds for support.  These soft corals are not the reef builders.
