The Magical Mayan History Tour offers an intimate glimpse into Belize’s history with a full day trip to the two of the world’s most incredible Mayan ruins sites. Located near the Guatemalan border, the ruin of Xunantunich (pronounced Shu-nan-tu-nitch) provides a panoramic view of the entire Cayo district. After a sumptuous lunch provided by Hamanasi’s restaurant, you’ll set out for Cahal Pech, which is the oldest known Maya site in the Belize River Valley. This set of Mayan ruins was once the royal family’s home, with evidence of habitation dating back to 1200 BCE. It comprises 34 incredible stone structures covering a little more than two acres, with the tallest temple reaching 25 meters toward the sky. The site is an archaeological reserve, complete with a visitor center, a small museum housing artifacts that have been excavated over the years, and a model of the site in its heyday.
