What is the primary function of the regulator?

Some pieces of equipment used for scuba diving play a minimal role while others are more for convenience than anything else is but the regulator is one of the fundamental pieces of equipment used in scuba diving today.  In fact, without a regulator, diving would be impossible.  This piece of equipment works by reducing air pressure from the dive tank to ambient water pressure, which then becomes the air you breathe through two parts – first and second stage.
