The 2015 Malaysian International Dive Show: A Scuba Show in Paradise

When you think of diving in the Indo-Pacific region, you might very well spend some time daydreaming about a trip to Malaysia. After all, with its clean, crystalline waters, its sparkling white beaches, and its incredible biodiversity, this country is definitely one of the world’s best places to log bottom time. If you’re thinking about traveling to Malaysia, consider planning your trip to coincide with the Malaysian International Dive Expo. Whether you’re new to diving or if you’ve been enjoying the sport for decades, you’ll almost certainly find this dive event appealing.

Malaysia International Dive Expo (MIDE) - When

The Malaysian International Dive Expo takes place toward the middle of June each year, just as water temperatures begin to climb toward the mid-80s; this year’s expo will be held June 12 – June 14. While it can rain at any time during the year, June is not considered part of the monsoon season – that actually happens between September and December. The expo is usually scheduled for a Friday, a Saturday, and a Sunday, giving attendees plenty of time to enjoy themselves between seminars.

Malaysia International Dive Expo (MIDE) - Where

This event takes place at the beautifully designed Putra World Trade Center, which is located at 41 Jalan Tun Ismail in Kuala Lumpur. The trade center is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur near the Golden Triangle, and is about 45 minutes from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. You can take the KL monorail or one of the many Kulala Lumpur commuter trains to the trade center; stops are within easy walking distance.

Malaysia International Dive Expo (MIDE) - Event Highlights

Since the Malaysian International Dive Expo got its start in 2006, scuba gear and accessory manufacturers have been offering outstanding displays, showcasing innovative new products, and even providing some special offers to visitors. As the show expands annually, the number of exhibitors increases too; now, you’ll find little-known companies alongside big names like Mares, Oceanic, Aqualung, and others.

Besides getting the fun and excitement that comes with seeing and trying new scuba toys, you’ll get the opportunity to meet and interact with members of top conservation groups. Some to look for include Reef Check Malaysia, Project AWARE, and the Hawksbill Release Programme Sipidan. These conservation groups and others are fully dedicated to keeping Malaysia’s marine habitats sustainable, and to providing education to visitors as well as to the thousands of Malaysians who become certified divers each year.

A number of seminars focusing on topics ranging from underwater photography to shark conservation are also available. There are many seminars to choose from, so be sure you visit the Malaysian International Dive Expo website to see what’s on offer.

A photo contest for adults and a coloring contest for kids are just a couple of the fun events that take place during the course of the expo; of course, simply spending time in the company of other scuba enthusiasts is enjoyable.

Malaysia International Dive Expo (MIDE) - Places to Stay and Things to See

While the dive expo typically partners with a hotel willing to offer a special rate to participants, there is no shortage of accommodations within Kuala Lumpur.  Be sure to make reservations well in advance; thousands of people come to Malaysia each year just to attend this international dive expo.

While you’ll certainly want to spend at least a portion of your time exploring Malaysia’s dive sites, you’ll also enjoy taking in some of the many sights and sound of Kuala Lumpur, including the Malaysia Heritage Walk, the fabled Batu Caves, and your choice of many cultural attractions and museums. Pack your bags and bring your favorite dive buddy along; this is certain to be one expo with lots of fringe benefits.
