What should be expected from a buoyancy compensation device (BCD)?

The BCD is an important part of the overall dive gear so proper fit is essential to proper buoyancy.  With this gear, the diver and equipment can float on the water’s surface making it easier to adjust for neutral buoyancy regardless of depth.  Therefore, in addition to proper fit, the BC should provide good lift, it should be made with quality materials and workmanship, the pressure release valves should be within easy reach, the straps should be quick-release, and pockets for inflatable bladders should have some type of closer, preferably Velcro, or zipper.
